Are overhead costs a good guide for charitable giving?

چکیده
Overhead cost ratios are easy to compare across charities relative to other metrics. Many third-party rating agencies rely on overhead cost ratios when evaluating charities, at least in part. Many donors report relying heavily on overhead cost metrics when choosing among charities. Donors exhibit strong distaste for charities that report high overhead costs, even when there is no relationship with the charity’s effectiveness. ELEVATOR PITCH

The evaluability bias in charitable giving: Saving administration costs or saving lives?
We describe the "evaluability bias": the tendency to weight the importance of an attribute in proportion to its ease of evaluation. We propose that the evaluability bias influences decision making in the context of charitable giving: people tend to have a strong preference for charities with low overhead ratios (lower administrative expenses) but not for charities with high cost-effectiveness (...
متن کاملThe Market for Charitable Giving
T hrough good and bad economic times, charitable gifts have continued to roll in largely unabated over the past half century. In a typical year, total charitable gifts of money now exceed 2 percent of gross domestic product. Moreover, charitable giving has nearly doubled in real terms since 1990, and the number of nonprofi t organizations registered with the IRS grew by nearly 60 percent from 1...
متن کاملIs charity a homogeneous good?
In this paper I estimate income and price elasticities of donations to six different charitable causes to test the assumption that charity is a homogeneous good. In the US, charitable donations can be deducted from taxable income. This has long been recognized as producing a price, or taxprice, of giving equal to one minus the marginal tax rate faced by the donor. A substantial portion of the e...
متن کاملDemand for Giving to Multiple Charities: Theory and Experiments
We study how competition among charities affects individuals’ giving behavior. We characterize a situation where a higher rebate subsidy shifts donations from one charity to another and increases total donations. We conduct two experiments: (i) individualized charitable giving where free riding incentives are shut down; and (ii) multi-donor charitable giving. We derive the demand for giving at ...
متن کاملPartial Reporting: An Example from Charitable Giving∗
Of necessity, many tax-price elasticities are calculated from tax return data. Survey data on families’ charitable giving and reporting on their tax returns indicate that reporting is a significant part of tax-price elasticity estimates. Roughly a quarter of the tax-price elasticity estimated from tax returns represents changes in reporting as opposed to changes in actual donations. These resul...
